Beautiful Failure

In Art, Images, Science on December 16, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Failures are important in Science. While most of the time they are just plain frustrating, every once in a while they can offer great insight. Well, today, I had a failure and while no particularly profound insight was forthcoming, a nice sight was certainly on offer.

I’ve been fabricating some nanofluidic devices in the clean room over the last few weeks, and after long arduous process involving many intermediate steps I discovered that one device didn’t turn out quite right. (For the interested: The resist hadn’t spun evenly on some portions, and hence after depositing metal (Pt), the lift-off wasn’t as good; some metal had managed to stick to the underlying oxide surface).

Anyway, despite the obvious disappointment, I was happy to take an image of what I think is a fabulous piece of abstract art.

The dark portions are silicon dioxide substrate, the teal regions are platinum metal, and the little squares in the bottom right at markers for e-beam lithography.

These lovely little girls reminded me of that wonderful time in life, when the ‘recess’ was the highlight of my day, and ‘whats in your dabba’ was the favorite game to play 🙂

It also made me think of how sharing food – cooking and eating is what I love to do with friends….

Mind it 🙂

One of the million reasons I love my India : Customization is not a prerogative of the rich, and ‘designer’ is pretty much anyone on the street

Random buniony thoughts and images by Arun Agnihotri

“The real voyage of discovery consists in not seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” – Unknown

Still find it difficult to ‘mail’, sitting in a cyber-café trying to shut-out the noises! Nothing like putting pen to paper – a hardcopy – something that I can hold in my hands and savour; allowing a slow release of images, trying to process the experiences, letting the mind go for a walk. Being able to reach for the pages without hesitation and scrolling. Somehow, I have never really enjoyed sending long electronically sterile mail!

Have just returned from Binsar to ‘civilization’ and as usual finding it tough.

Sunsets on Water

Depending on where you live on the planet, Summer, can be the short respite you crave from the cold bleakness of the rest of the year, or the hellish furnace you endure while waiting for cooler weather to arrive.  But regardless of location, the longer day  gives almost everyone a chance to free themselves of work and appreciate the joy of the summer sunset.

A few memorable ones that were enjoyed by a canal,  a mighty river and a lake:

Not-So-Random Images

Our friend Sifar, in addition to her many talents, is a remarkable observer of life.  Reading the tack-board in her living room is something I look forward to, every time I visit. Email lets me have the good fortune of getting some of those snippets in my inbox from time to time 🙂

She recently forwarded me these cute, educational Eco-doodles (just a name I made up) that led to the discovery of the whole series drawn by Prof. Hiroshi Takatsuki on the  ‘Japan for Sustainability’ website.
