These Songs Considered

In Music on May 23, 2009 at 3:38 am

On a seemingly unfruitful day, where I have been bogged down trying to work through a problem for a paper I am writing, it was  a sheer delight (perhaps relief would be better)  to come across the May 4 edition of All Songs Considered on NPR. What a cracker of a show !!  The most amazing discovery was of Mamer, a seemingly brilliant young Uighur musician from the grasslands of Xinjiang. That song, Man, from his album, Eagle, is fabulous !! The BBC Music Review calls the album, an

[..] atmospheric solo debut, which has a vivid sense of place.

Also on offer was Marianne Dissard of ………. Tucson !! She would be known to most followers of that wonderful band from Tucson, Calexico. From brief glimpses in Ballad of Cable Hogue, its no surprise she’s out with her own album (co-produced by Joey Burns!). Sounds great !

And finally, the best jazz record of the year (so far) (according to Bob Boilen): A fantastic collaboration between the ethiopian Mulatu Astatke and the London group The Heliocentrics. Blue Nile is simply amazing – very tightly knit and yet extremely soulful (the guitars notwithstanding, for some reason the track reminded me of early Weather Report, in its overall feel)
